What the Modality is
TF-CBT is a structured, evidence-based therapy designed to help children, teens, and sometimes adults process and heal from trauma. It combines cognitive behavioral techniques with trauma-sensitive approaches to help individuals understand how their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are connected to their trauma experiences.
How it Works in Therapy
TF-CBT typically takes place over 12–20 sessions. Clients learn coping skills to manage trauma-related symptoms, such as anxiety or nightmares, and gradually work toward creating a trauma narrative—a personal story that helps them make sense of what happened. This narrative is often shared with a trusted caregiver or loved one as part of the healing process. Sessions may include relaxation techniques, cognitive restructuring, and caregiver involvement to support the child’s progress.
Why it’s Helpful
TF-CBT is especially effective for children and adolescents ages 3–18 who have experienced trauma, including abuse, neglect, loss, or violence. It helps reduce symptoms of PTSD, depression, and anxiety, while also improving emotional regulation and strengthening caregiver-child relationships. By providing a safe space to process trauma, TF-CBT supports long-term healing and resilience.
