Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT)

What the Modality is

Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) is a structured, evidence-based approach that strengthens the relationship between caregivers and young children. It focuses on improving communication, increasing positive behaviors, and reducing challenging ones through real-time coaching and play-based interactions.

Goals of Treatment:
  • Foster a warm, nurturing caregiver-child relationship
  • Increase children's prosocial behaviors
  • Reduce disruptive or challenging behaviors
  • Create lasting, positive changes in both parent and child behavior

How it Works in Therapy

  • Weekly therapy sessions led by trained professionals.
  • Daily 5-minute practice sessions at home involving supportive play between parent and child.
  • Parents will be coached in:
    • Play Therapy Techniques
    • Differential Reinforcement of Positive Behaviors
    • Nurturing, Active Listening, and Positive Communication Skills

Why it’s Helpful

PCIT is especially effective for children ages 2 to 7 who are experiencing behavioral issues like tantrums, defiance, or aggression. It helps caregivers feel more confident and connected, while children learn to respond to structure and positive attention. Over time, PCIT supports healthier family dynamics and long-term emotional development.
