What the Modality is
Emotion Focused Family Therapy (EFFT) is a therapeutic approach based on attachment theory that helps families connect by expressing deeper, more vulnerable emotions—like fear, sadness, or longing—that are often hidden beneath behaviors such as anger or withdrawal. It focuses on strengthening emotional bonds and improving communication within the family.
How it Works in Therapy
In EFFT sessions, caregivers are guided to respond to their child’s emotional needs with empathy and validation. Therapists use role-playing and scripting exercises to help parents practice using three key validation statements while still maintaining healthy boundaries and expectations. The goal is to help caregivers feel more confident in managing their own emotions and supporting their child’s emotional development.
Why it’s Helpful
EFFT is effective for families with children or adolescents of all ages, especially when there are struggles with conflict resolution, power dynamics, or communication. It helps reduce emotional reactivity, fosters secure attachment, and promotes healing by creating a safe space for emotional expression and connection.
