What the Modality is
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a type of therapy that helps people manage intense emotions and improve relationships. It’s based on the idea of “dialectics,” or balancing two opposing ideas—like acceptance and change. DBT teaches practical skills to help people stay present, cope with distress, regulate emotions, and communicate more effectively.
How it Works in Therapy
In DBT sessions, clients learn and practice four main skill areas:
- Mindfulness – staying grounded in the present moment
- Distress Tolerance – managing crises without making things worse
- Emotion Regulation – understanding and reducing emotional intensity
- Interpersonal Effectiveness – setting boundaries and improving communication
Why it’s Helpful
DBT is especially helpful for people who experience intense emotions, chronic relationship conflict, or patterns of crisis. It’s commonly used for borderline personality disorder, self-harm, suicidal thoughts, and mood disorders. DBT supports healing by helping clients build a life that feels meaningful and manageable, even in the face of emotional challenges.
